Harlow Health Centre - Did You Know?

Add News

The concept of a 'Health Centre' was first conceived by Lord Stephen Taylor, who was a distinguished member of the Harlow Development Corporation Board.  His simple idea was to have one building with a doctor, a dentist and a nurse all under one roof. In 1951, Harlow became the first town to open a health centre in Britain called Haygarth House.

The first purpose built Health Centre, Nuffield House, was opened in the Stow in 1955.

The town of Harlow was also a pioneer in
the idea of an Industrial Health Service, whereby nurses would visit factories and businesses to monitor the health of the workforce.
